Personal - Weekly Photo - 4

PERSONAL

I chose the theme this week and went for personal. I had two shots in mind. 1) was of a collection of personal items that I keep in a small wicker basket and the 2) was a macro shot of a watch that was given to me on my very dear Uncle's death.

I can't say either has progressed my photography capabilities, which perhaps is something that Tim and I should strive to do each week, but they were apt for the theme.

I did opt to use an old post-processing trick, a vignette, which I probably over-used in the past, that really helped draw the focus into the centre of this shot.

My alternative photo for this week was the collection of personal items. Each one is many years of memories for events, people and jobs. Each one treasured and remembered and each one quite personal to me.

  1. I'm just a sucker for the really narrow depth of field effects you get with macro shot. Love it. Probably more so than the vignette effect! I like the use of black and white, It's an ideal scene to use it. The black and white, the narrow depth of field and the vignette effect all lead the attention into the inscription quite nicely.

I find myself slightly distracted by the clasp obscuring the bottom of the watch. I get that it provides a bit of context but perhaps the composition could be better if the circle of the watch back was completed. Just a small critique.

    1. My first reaction to your comment was one of happiness. And then I read the second sentence and found myself saying "do you know how flinging hard it is to get a shot with a bracelet that's attached to the subject, do you?".

      But ignoring that outburst, thanks!

I do agree with you that a narrow depth of focus is really pleasing to the eye. I love it mostly for portraits where the face is pin sharp and the background is completely blown out. I guess this shot is just an exaggeration of that effect.

Thanks for your comments Timmy :)
